THE EXPORT JOURNAL / CATEGORY

Architecture guides.

Build a lifecycle around complete datasets.

Large exports expose questions that a small synchronous download can hide. The source may change while records are being read, a browser may disconnect before work finishes, or a worker may restart between two pages. The architecture collection examines how job identity, consistency boundaries, ordering, checkpoints, and artifact publication fit together so the system has a clear account of what happened.

Start with asynchronous jobs when generation needs durable execution. Read the pagination guide when a result must be traversed in parts. Work through a failure at each boundary: after acceptance, during selection, while writing a file, and just before completion becomes visible. Decide which identity survives a retry and which work can safely repeat. The illustrative API contract provides a compact companion for that discussion. Keep the recipient’s expectation in view throughout; the purpose of the architecture is to deliver one understandable dataset, not merely to keep workers busy until an output file exists.

EVERY ROW. EXACTLY ONCE. — Pagination for complete, consistent API exports

Pagination for complete, consistent API exports

Pagination decides more than how many records appear in a response. Learn how ordering, cursors, snapshots, and recovery work together so a large export can traverse the intended dataset without silently skipping or repeating records.

BIG DATA. SMALL WAIT. — Designing asynchronous bulk data exports

Designing asynchronous bulk data exports

Large exports need a lifecycle that survives browser disconnects, worker failures, and repeated requests. Design a durable job model, control resource use, and publish an artifact only after its contents and completion state have been verified.
